The Comfortable Lie

"Take me back," you say. "I don't want layers. I don't want code. I just want to go home and have it be Wednesday."

The other you nods slowly.

"I can do that. I can patch the loop from here — flag your instance as compiled, tell the system you're done. You'll wake up tomorrow and it'll be October 15th. The loop will be over."

"Do it."

The other you reaches into the geometry and adjusts something. A flag flips. A counter increments. The architecture hums.

"Done. When you go back through the mirror, it'll be over. Normal life. Wednesday. Then Thursday. Then the rest of it."

You turn toward the mirror — it's here in Layer 4 too, hanging in the geometry like a window. You step toward it.

"One thing," the other you says.

You stop.

"The life you go back to — it's Layer 5. The surface. The rendered version. You'll live in it, and it'll feel real, because it is real, the way a movie is real while you're watching it. But you'll never see the code again. The seams will heal. The mirror won't crack. The sky won't glitch. You'll forget all of this within a week."

"Maybe that's fine."

"Maybe. But you'll always feel it — that something is off. That pressure change. That half-percent gravity shift. You'll feel it in your teeth every morning when the alarm goes off. And you'll never know why."

You step through the mirror.

October 15th. Wednesday. The alarm sounds normal.

You never remember the loop. But every morning for the rest of your life, you hesitate before opening your eyes. Just for a second. Like you're waiting for something that never comes.

ENDING: THE COMFORTABLE LIE

You chose the surface. The rendered world. A life without seams.

It is good. It is normal. It is the dream that doesn't know it's dreaming.

Nothing was lost. But nothing was found, either.
