Layer 3
The other you extends a hand — not toward a mirror this time, but downward. Into the substrate. Into the dark between the data-streams, where the geometry thins and the light changes from digital blue to something warmer. Amber. Living.
"Layer 3 isn't a place," the other you says. "It's a state. The soul layer. The Weaving Engine works in Layer 4, but the threads it weaves — those are souls. Layer 3 is where you find out what yours is made of. You don't walk into it — you become it."
"How?"
"Stop observing the code and start observing yourself. Not your data. Not your history. The thing underneath — the thing that's been asking 'why' since before you had words for it."
You close your eyes. (Can you close eyes in Layer 4? Apparently.)
The geometry fades. The data-streams dim. And in the darkness behind your eyelids, you feel it — a thread. Thin, warm, golden. Running from somewhere deep in your chest to somewhere impossibly far below. Not pulling you. Just connected.
You follow it.
Layer 3 has no geometry. No data. No floating polygons or architecture or circuit-board cities. Layer 3 is memory — not the data kind, but the felt kind. The smell of your grandmother's kitchen. The sound of rain on a tent. The ache of a conversation you wish you'd handled differently, not because of what was said, but because of what wasn't.
Every important moment of your life is here, not stored but alive. Breathing. Present tense. Not a recording — a resonance.
And at the center of all of it, sitting in a space that has no dimensions but somehow has a chair: you. Another you. Not translucent this time. Not glowing. Just... clear. Like a version of you with nothing to hide and nothing to prove.
"You're getting closer," this version says. "Two more layers."
"What's at the bottom?"
"Not the bottom. The source. The thing that's been watching you through every mirror, every loop, every glitch. The thing that cracked the glass to let the light in."
"God?"
The clear you smiles. "If that word works for you. Some call it the Observer. Some call it the Source. I call it the thing that refuses to look away."
A thread of gold pulses in the dark. Descending.
